Fabric

I love the feeling of weaving something that looks like real fabric.
I need to make some mock-ups of these moss/fungus growth pieces. It's going to be a long weekend!

This coming month = a very steep hill

I've so much to do, so this is just a quick progress post!

I feel so depressed being cooped up inside on perhaps the nicest day so far this year. But it is all in aid of a decent grade, so it's no ones fault but mine for not keeping on top of everything.

Ruth Laskey

Whilst doing some artist research last week, I came across Ruth Laskey, a textile artist who creates these really delicate and beautiful pieces.







Her use of colour, and the way it subtly gradates, has become really inspirational to the way that I dye my yarns and plan the stripes within my warp.

So my loom is ready and waiting to weave on Monday, and today is such a nice day that I feel quite depressed spending it indoors. I'm tempted to go out and buy some folders, if just to enjoy the sunshine and warm weather, but it's a Saturday which means I'd only get stressed out!
I suppose I shall just stay in and work through my sketchbook, design ideas and planning next weeks weaving.

Some Work

I haven't really posted all that much of my work since I've finished it off.

So...here are the highlights. Haha.



Elastic extra warp creating a pintuck effect


Elastic extra warp. It has pulled tighter on one side than the other, hmm.


Elastic weft. I like the contrast between the flat and rippled areas.


Danish medallion technique with varying thickness yarns.


Danish medallion technique with thick elastic. Created a really interesting texture.


Mohair pintucks.


Mohair and linen. Like the difference in texture, hairy mossy mohair and the rough linen.


My favourite, floats and a dip-dyed warp.

Back to the Loom

Yes, I'm back to weaving again. I put on perhaps my largest warp yet, 30 inch wide and 14 foot long.
I can't wait to see how it turns out, but I still have the long task of threading it up!

Moss Jars

Laura sent me a link last week to an etsy shop selling these beautiful jars and other items embroidered with 'lichen' and 'moss'.
They're very similar to some ideas that I had earlier in this project, it's a shame that my ideas have progressed in a different direction, they would have been a real inspiration! They still are, but perhaps not for this project!

Hastings

I've just returned from a short trip to Hastings. I think a bit of down-time and some fresh air was just what I need before this last month and a half of seriously hard work.
In fact said as month and a half rather than 6 weeks sounds frighteningly short.

Hampton Court

Me and mother went on a little trip to Hampton Court Palace yesterday.
It was really quite nice, however it was a little dark inside and most pictures didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped. Still, an enjoyable day out!

I love it when the wind blows the window shut

I walked home in the rain with no umbrella and holes in my shoes. It was brilliant. I definately love spring. Everything was damp smelling and green.

Added to my wall...I can't look up without seeing something inspiring or that makes me feel happy. Productive workspace.

Oh la la.

Such a long and tiring day today. I'm ready for bed, but I feel the urge to do some drawing. Though as I can barely sit up properly, I don't think I'll last very long.
I'm so proud of what I did today. I havent photographed it properly. I think tomorrow, or at the weekend, I'll photograph everything properly, and just do a huge post full of photos.
But for now....

I'm so happy with this. I haven't woven anything that feels like real fabric for a while. I'll be sticking with the fine wools now!
