The Long Awaited Loom...

Yes, I finally got my hands on one.
I needs alot of 'doing up'...sanding, varnishing, new screws etc. but should be up and runnning in a few weeks!
Picture isn't that great, mostly because it's in two bits (and by the end of today, in even more bits)

I can't wait to get weaving on it! But for now, back to my little bird brooches, pictures of which shall be here later I assume.

Portfolio collection one.

I've finally got a few samples from this project to put into my portfolio!

All based on ideas I had at the start with elastic and wool, and using the dip-dyed stripe warp that I've fallen in love with.

Today I'm playing with rope, hopefully I'll also have another collection by the end of the day!

Fabric

I love the feeling of weaving something that looks like real fabric.
I need to make some mock-ups of these moss/fungus growth pieces. It's going to be a long weekend!

This coming month = a very steep hill

I've so much to do, so this is just a quick progress post!

So my loom is ready and waiting to weave on Monday, and today is such a nice day that I feel quite depressed spending it indoors. I'm tempted to go out and buy some folders, if just to enjoy the sunshine and warm weather, but it's a Saturday which means I'd only get stressed out!
I suppose I shall just stay in and work through my sketchbook, design ideas and planning next weeks weaving.

Some Work

I haven't really posted all that much of my work since I've finished it off.

So...here are the highlights. Haha.

elastic warp and faux pintucks
Elastic extra warp creating a pintuck effect

elastic warp
Elastic extra warp. It has pulled tighter on one side than the other, hmm.

elasticated weft
Elastic weft. I like the contrast between the flat and rippled areas.

danish medallion with rope
Danish medallion technique with varying thickness yarns.

danish medallion with elastic
Danish medallion technique with thick elastic. Created a really interesting texture.

pintucks
Mohair pintucks.

mohair linen texture contrast
Mohair and linen. Like the difference in texture, hairy mossy mohair and the rough linen.

floats and dip dyed warp
My favourite, floats and a dip-dyed warp.

Back to the Loom

Yes, I'm back to weaving again. I put on perhaps my largest warp yet, 30 inch wide and 14 foot long.
I can't wait to see how it turns out, but I still have the long task of threading it up!
Here's a few photos of it going on. I love the dip-dyed stripes!

Oh la la.

Such a long and tiring day today. I'm ready for bed, but I feel the urge to do some drawing. Though as I can barely sit up properly, I don't think I'll last very long.
I'm so proud of what I did today. I havent photographed it properly. I think tomorrow, or at the weekend, I'll photograph everything properly, and just do a huge post full of photos.
But for now....

I love the colours and tones...I'll be doing this again!

cloth!
I'm so happy with this. I haven't woven anything that feels like real fabric for a while. I'll be sticking with the fine wools now!

stripes
this is the back...I was too lazy to lift all the shafts I needed, so the pattern is on the back

beautiful colour gradation throughout the samples...it makes me so happy!

this is what the front side looks like...the colours are off because i took it from under the loom and edited it lighter.

beautifully productive day!

Blogging from the bath

My bath was becoming dangerously full so I decided to hop in. I then near-scalded my feet.

A midweek bath can only mean one thing: an intense few days.
Here is what I have created so far this week
(I'm currently photographing last weeks samples, so they'll be here later on!)

Not the earliest morning...

I awarded myself an accidental lie-in. I just couldn't stay awake at 7am.
I'm waiting for the bathroom to free up, so I thought I'd post the update on my weaving so far...

First warp:

painted spaced warp
I crammed and spaced the warp and painted it...the colours are beautiful!

spaced warp weaving
the denser and lighter areas of warp give really interesting textures and varying depths and intensity of colour, I'm so pleased that I painted it!

mossy bobble pintuck
I've yet to photograph this one in it's finished state!

Now for this weeks warp! I've only completed one sample, but I've been learning techniques, which I shall explain later, or tomorrow, as I've left all the photocopies under the loom! I think theyre called Danish Medallions though? (a quick google says I'm right!)

Up-hill struggle

I feel like I have so much work to do, and time is just slipping away before I can do anything.
I'm falling asleep over my laptop, but feel compelled to post pictures of the dye book I have just started. I only have two yarns and four dyes to put in it so far, but will be adding to it over easter with anything and everything I can find!

I feel like an alchemist, experimenting and documenting my findings.
I've been doing alot of weaving lately, here's a sneak peek at my pin-tuck work...I'll post more tomorrow.
